The Beauties of the Province of Taranto

In recent years, Puglia has become one of the most popular destinations for a holiday.
Visitors from all over the world choose it to experience the beauty of this land, made of sea, sun, delicious food, and traditions.

Among the most fascinating destinations is undoubtedly the Province of Taranto. Overlooking the Ionian Sea, Taranto is a city with an extraordinary history and a treasure chest full of wonders to discover. Starting with the famous “Gold of Taranto”, on display at MarTa, the National Archaeological Museum, and continuing with the Doric columns, the underground hypogea, and the Greco-Roman necropolises — symbols of a glorious past.

What to See in Taranto and its Province

A must-do: stroll along the beautiful seafront leading to the Aragonese Castle, the city’s main fortress, then head into the old town, located on the ancient island, and visit the Cathedral of San Cataldo, the oldest cathedral in Puglia, built around the mid-10th century.

The Ionian coastline enchants everyone with its incredible seashores, featuring crystal-clear waters and golden sandy beaches. Among the most beautiful: Marina di Ginosa, Castellaneta Marina, Campomarino, and San Pietro in Bevagna.

Near Torre Colimena beach, you will find the Salina dei Monaci, a protected natural oasis inhabited by pink flamingos, which make this unspoiled landscape even more breathtaking.

But Taranto is not just about the sea. The inland areas also offer authentic wonders to discover.

In the heart of the Itria Valley lies Martina Franca, a romantic and charming town with narrow alleys and baroque buildings. A must-see is also Grottaglie, with its historic Ceramics District, dedicated to traditional pottery that has made the city famous worldwide. Further south is Manduria, once the city of the Messapians and today the land of the renowned Primitivo wine.

Unique and characteristic places of the Taranto province also include the ravines, natural gorges carved into the rock that preserve traces of ancient cave life. Among the most impressive is the Gravina di Laterza, known as the “Grand Canyon of Europe”, stretching 12 km long and 200 meters deep.
