Inhabited since <strong data-start=\"302\" data-end=\"324\">prehistoric times,<\/strong> little is known about its Roman and Early Medieval history, while the first documented records date back to <strong data-start=\"433\" data-end=\"464\">1085 during the Norman era.<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"468\" data-end=\"756\">The territory was greatly loved by <strong data-start=\"503\" data-end=\"520\">Frederick II,<\/strong> who expanded the pre-existing Norman castle. After the Angevin and Aragonese periods, the fiefdom was incorporated into the powerful <strong data-start=\"654\" data-end=\"689\">Acquaviva family of Conversano,<\/strong> until 1806, when the decree abolishing feudal rights was issued.<\/p><hr data-start=\"758\" data-end=\"761\" \/><p data-start=\"763\" data-end=\"790\"><strong data-start=\"763\" data-end=\"788\">The Tourist Itinerary<\/strong><\/p><ul data-start=\"792\" data-end=\"2049\"><li data-start=\"792\" data-end=\"1076\"><p data-start=\"794\" data-end=\"1076\"><strong data-start=\"794\" data-end=\"823\">The Norman-Swabian Castle<\/strong><br data-start=\"823\" data-end=\"826\" \/>One of the most beautiful castles in Puglia, built in <strong data-start=\"883\" data-end=\"891\">1087<\/strong> by the Norman <strong data-start=\"906\" data-end=\"940\">Richard Seneschal d\u2019Hauteville<\/strong> and later modified by <strong data-start=\"963\" data-end=\"990\">Frederick II of Swabia.<\/strong> Its fa\u00e7ade is characterized by towering walls clad with protruding ashlars (bugne).<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1078\" data-end=\"1253\"><p data-start=\"1080\" data-end=\"1253\"><strong data-start=\"1080\" data-end=\"1105\">The Municipal Theater<\/strong><br data-start=\"1105\" data-end=\"1108\" \/>Built in <strong data-start=\"1120\" data-end=\"1129\">1841,<\/strong> when the town council decided to convert the old \u201cLamione,\u201d a large hall of the former Dominican convent, into a theater.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1255\" data-end=\"1604\"><p data-start=\"1257\" data-end=\"1604\"><strong data-start=\"1257\" data-end=\"1278\">The Mother Church<\/strong><br data-start=\"1278\" data-end=\"1281\" \/>After building the castle in <strong data-start=\"1313\" data-end=\"1322\">1087,<\/strong> Richard Seneschal also founded the <strong data-start=\"1358\" data-end=\"1398\">Palatine Church of St. Peter (1150),<\/strong> replacing the ancient Church of San Marco. Later, it became known as the <strong data-start=\"1472\" data-end=\"1505\">Church of Madonna della Neve.<\/strong><br data-start=\"1505\" data-end=\"1508\" \/>The fa\u00e7ade and bell tower were completed in <strong data-start=\"1555\" data-end=\"1564\">1893,<\/strong> as recorded on the church\u2019s pediment.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1606\" data-end=\"2049\"><p data-start=\"1608\" data-end=\"2049\"><strong data-start=\"1608\" data-end=\"1646\">The National Archaeological Museum<\/strong><br data-start=\"1646\" data-end=\"1649\" \/>A must-see is the <strong data-start=\"1670\" data-end=\"1708\">Monte Sannace Archaeological Area,<\/strong> located 5 km from Gioia del Colle, in the heart of the <strong data-start=\"1764\" data-end=\"1782\">Murgia Barese.<\/strong> The slopes of the hill were once occupied by a vast <strong data-start=\"1835\" data-end=\"1860\">Peucetian settlement,<\/strong> a key link between the Adriatic and Ionian coasts.
