From 207 BC it was conquered by the <strong data-start=\"366\" data-end=\"376\">Romans<\/strong> and later, in the Early Middle Ages, by the <strong data-start=\"421\" data-end=\"462\">Goths, Byzantines, Lombards, Saracens<\/strong>, and, from around 1040, by the <strong data-start=\"494\" data-end=\"530\">Normans, Swabians, and Angevins.<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"534\" data-end=\"711\">From the original <strong data-start=\"552\" data-end=\"600\">Byzantine fortification dating back to 1023,<\/strong> today only one tower remains, incorporated into the buildings near the <strong data-start=\"672\" data-end=\"709\">Church of Santa Maria Immacolata.<\/strong><\/p><hr data-start=\"713\" data-end=\"716\" \/><p data-start=\"718\" data-end=\"748\"><strong data-start=\"718\" data-end=\"746\">The Historical Itinerary<\/strong><\/p><ul data-start=\"750\" data-end=\"1455\"><li data-start=\"750\" data-end=\"1004\"><p data-start=\"752\" data-end=\"1004\"><strong data-start=\"752\" data-end=\"776\">The Megalithic Walls<\/strong> \u2013 the itinerary begins here and continues toward the <strong data-start=\"830\" data-end=\"848\">Mother Church,<\/strong> whose construction date is uncertain, though its <strong data-start=\"898\" data-end=\"913\">rose window<\/strong> is clearly Romanesque. The inscription on the portal records an enlargement in <strong data-start=\"993\" data-end=\"1002\">1507.<\/strong><\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1005\" data-end=\"1295\"><p data-start=\"1007\" data-end=\"1295\">Inside stands an impressive <strong data-start=\"1035\" data-end=\"1082\">18th-century statue of Saint Thomas Becket,<\/strong> Archbishop of Canterbury and patron saint of the city, along with a remarkable painting of the <strong data-start=\"1178\" data-end=\"1194\">Last Supper.<\/strong> The <strong data-start=\"1199\" data-end=\"1214\">bell tower,<\/strong> declared a national monument in 1890, dates back to the <strong data-start=\"1271\" data-end=\"1293\">14th\u201315th century.<\/strong><\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1296\" data-end=\"1455\"><p data-start=\"1298\" data-end=\"1455\">The route continues to the <strong data-start=\"1325\" data-end=\"1345\">Byzantine Tower,<\/strong> circular in shape, built in limestone and earth mortar, which still contains the waters of an ancient well.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><hr data-start=\"1457\" data-end=\"1460\" \/><p data-start=\"1462\" data-end=\"1497\"><strong data-start=\"1462\" data-end=\"1495\">Rock-Hewn Churches and Crypts<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"1499\" data-end=\"1832\">Mottola is also known for its <strong data-start=\"1529\" data-end=\"1563\">rock-hewn churches and crypts.<\/strong> The most important are located near <strong data-start=\"1600\" data-end=\"1624\">Masseria Casalrotto,<\/strong> where the remains of an ancient <strong data-start=\"1657\" data-end=\"1678\">Benedictine Abbey<\/strong> can be found.<br data-start=\"1692\" data-end=\"1695\" \/>Other noteworthy churches include the <strong data-start=\"1733\" data-end=\"1810\">Madonna delle Sette Lampade, San Gregorio, Sant\u2019Angelo, Santa Margherita,<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1815\" data-end=\"1830\">San Nicola.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The territory of Mottola began to be inhabited by indigenous populations during the Bronze Age (12th\u201310th century BC), while in the Iron Age the Iapygians settled here.
