The human presence in this area is confirmed by artifacts found in the ravines, dating back to a period between the <strong data-start=\"897\" data-end=\"928\">5th millennium and 1800 BC.<\/strong><\/p><hr data-start=\"932\" data-end=\"935\" \/><p data-start=\"937\" data-end=\"975\"><strong data-start=\"937\" data-end=\"973\">The Historical Tourist Itinerary<\/strong><\/p><ul data-start=\"977\" data-end=\"2188\"><li data-start=\"977\" data-end=\"1088\"><p data-start=\"979\" data-end=\"1088\"><strong data-start=\"979\" data-end=\"993\">The Castle<\/strong><br data-start=\"993\" data-end=\"996\" \/>Probably built on a Norman fortress, the castle overlooks the <strong data-start=\"1061\" data-end=\"1086\">Gravina di San Marco.<\/strong><\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1090\" data-end=\"1269\"><p data-start=\"1092\" data-end=\"1269\"><strong data-start=\"1092\" data-end=\"1121\">The Ancient Mother Church<\/strong><br data-start=\"1121\" data-end=\"1124\" \/>Incorporated into one of the castle\u2019s bastions, its chapel is dedicated to <strong data-start=\"1202\" data-end=\"1218\">San Lorenzo,<\/strong> whose statue in gilded wood is preserved inside.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1271\" data-end=\"1852\"><p data-start=\"1273\" data-end=\"1852\"><strong data-start=\"1273\" data-end=\"1324\">The Sanctuary of the Madonna della Scala (1731)<\/strong><br data-start=\"1324\" data-end=\"1327\" \/>Rising at the end of a spectacular staircase of <strong data-start=\"1378\" data-end=\"1391\">125 steps<\/strong> descending to the bottom of the ravine once called the <strong data-start=\"1447\" data-end=\"1469\">\u201cValley of Roses.\u201d<\/strong> Nearby, visitors can explore the remains of the <strong data-start=\"1518\" data-end=\"1548\">\u201cPharmacy of San Greguro,\u201d<\/strong> a complex of monastic cells (laura) connected to one another.<br data-start=\"1610\" data-end=\"1613\" \/>Also worth visiting is the <strong data-start=\"1643\" data-end=\"1697\">Rock-Hewn Church of the Madonna della Buona Nuova,<\/strong> partly demolished to make way for the sanctuary.
